The Honorable Michael M. Cabonargi

Since 2011, Michael M. Cabonargi has served as the Commissioner of the Second District on the Cook County Board of Review. Prior to joining the Board, Commissioner Cabonargi served as a senior attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission. Commissioner Cabonargi served previously as an aide to U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Paul Simon (D-IL).

The Cook County Board of Review is the largest real estate assessment appeal board in the United States, playing a vital role in calculating the $13 billion tax obligation for Chicago and Cook County property owners. As Commissioner, Mike Cabonargi has worked hard to ensure homeowners and business owners receive a full and fair review of the assessed values of their property and to guarantee schools and local communities receive their needed revenues when they need them. To accomplish these goals, Commissioner Cabonargi has made the Board of Review more transparent, open, efficient and effective. In 2015, the Board launched a digital appeals processing system that saves money in employee overtime and document storage and provides taxpayers a more efficient, complete and reliable review of their appeals. The National Association of Counties recognized this digital system with a 2017 Achievement Award that honors innovative, effective county government programs that enhance services for residents. Further, using social media and collaborating with community organizations, Commissioner Cabonargi's office has contacted more than 1.5 million residents and held more than 250 community outreach sessions. Moreover, he opened the Board to the public by translating the Board's appeal forms and documents into Spanish, Polish, Korean and Chinese. Again, Commissioner Cabonargi's mission is to make sure every homeowner receives a full and fair appeal, especially in communities that have traditionally underutilized Cook County’s tax appeal processes.
