Judge Celestia L. Mays

Judge Celestia L. Mays was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County by the Illinois Supreme Court. Currently, she is assigned to the Fourth District in Maywood where she presides over misdemeanor and traffic offenses. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Mays was the principal of Celestia L. Mays, P.C., for over 22 years where her law practice concentrated in the areas of family law, probate law and residential real estate closings. She has been found Well Qualified by the Chicago Counsel of Lawyers; Highly Qualified/Highly Recommended by the Cook County Bar Association, Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois and the Puerto Rican Bar Association; and all other evaluating bar associations have found her Recommended or Qualified to serve as a judge.

Judge Mays has been very active in the legal community. She is a past president of the Cook County Bar Association (CCBA), and served as deputy regional director and treasurer for Region VII of the National Bar Association. She was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve on the Committee on Character and Fitness, and she is a former board member of Legal Aid Chicago (formerly LAF). She is also a graduate member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Omega Chapter.

Judge Mays has received numerous awards and recognitions for her service to legal community and her civic involvement. She received the CCBA Presidential Award in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2010 and 2012; the CCBA Meritorious Service Award for 2002 and 2010; and the CCBA Judicial Award in 2019. Judge Mays is also the recipient the Crescent Moon Award of Excellence for Legal Leadership from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Upsilon Sigma Chapter, was named one of 100 Women of Inspiration by TCW (Today’s Chicago Woman) Magazine, and received the Spirit of Detroit Award from her hometown.

Judge Mays received her J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy and her B.A. in Political Science and Communications from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
